How Much They Eat

Every animal eats a percentage of its own body weight each day — cattle and horses around 2–2.5%, sheep 2–5%, goats 2–6%. We use a sensible midpoint for winter feeding.

Adjusting for Real Hay

Hay still has some moisture in it — usually 7–10%. That means the actual weight of hay you feed is a little more than the "pure feed" number, so we adjust for that automatically.

Hay Questions Real Farmers Actually Ask

The questions we hear most often from cattle, horse, sheep, and goat owners — answered in plain terms, no jargon.

A beef cow eats about 2–2.5% of her body weight in hay every day. For a 1,100 lb cow, that's roughly 24–30 lbs of hay a day. Once temperatures drop below freezing, she'll eat a bit more just to stay warm — add another 10–20% on the coldest days. Cows in their last few months of pregnancy also need extra, closer to 3% of their body weight, since they're feeding a calf too.

It's simple math once you know your numbers: daily hay per animal × number of animals × feeding days, divided by bale weight. For example, 10 cows eating 27 lbs a day for 150 days, with 1,000 lb round bales, comes to about 40 bales. Add another 10–15% on top for waste and bad weather you didn't plan for. A 1,000 lb round bale fed to one 1,200 lb cow eating 30 lbs a day lasts about 33 days. With a feeder ring keeping waste down, plan on closer to 28–30 days per bale. Feed it straight on the ground instead, and waste can eat up over half the bale, cutting that down to as little as 2–3 weeks. And remember — for a herd of 10 cows, that same bale only lasts 3–4 days, not a month.

This depends heavily on your climate zone and pasture management:

  • Northern US & Canada (Zones 3–5): 150–210 days (October through April)
  • Midwest & Northeast (Zones 5–6): 120–180 days (November through March/April)
  • Mid-South (Zones 6–7): 60–120 days (December through February)
  • Deep South (Zones 7–9): 30–60 days (January through February)

Always add a 10–15% buffer for unexpected cold snaps or late spring. Do not allow grazing until pasture grasses reach 6–8 inches in spring — early grazing damages root systems and reduces summer productivity.

Hay waste is one of the most controllable costs in winter feeding. Key strategies include:

  • Use hay feeders or rings — reduces round bale waste from 57% to 5–33%
  • Store hay indoors or on pallets covered with tarps — outdoor storage on bare ground can cause 20–50% dry matter loss
  • Feed in smaller amounts more frequently for small-square bale operations
  • Limit access time — allowing animals 2–4 hours of access to a round bale rather than continuous access reduces waste significantly
  • Test hay quality — feeding poor-quality hay means animals eat more to meet nutritional needs, increasing waste and cost

Yes, and more than most people expect. A cow with a good winter coat starts needing extra energy once it drops below about 18–20°F — and needs roughly 1% more feed for every degree colder than that. If she's wet or standing in mud, that threshold jumps much higher, so she'll be eating more even on days that don't feel that cold to you. If your winters regularly dip below 20°F, plan on a 10–20% buffer on top of your normal feeding rate.

Yes, it's worth it. Hay quality can swing a lot even from the same field in different years — some hay barely meets an animal's needs, and some far exceeds it. Feeding poor-quality hay means your animals eat more (and you buy more) just to get the same nutrition. A hay test usually costs $15–30 and can easily save you hundreds of dollars in wasted feed or unnecessary supplements. Where Most of Your Hay Actually Disappears To: Waste

Here's the part that surprises a lot of people: feeding hay straight on the ground can waste more than half of it — trampled, rained on, or just walked away from and never eaten. A simple hay ring or feeder cuts that waste down to somewhere around 5–15%. Over a whole winter's worth of hay, that difference alone can be worth thousands of dollars. If you only make one change this year, it should be adding a feeder.

Storing Hay So It Actually Lasts the Winter

Good hay stored badly is money left in the mud. Keep bales up off bare ground — pallets or a gravel pad both work — and cover them if they'll be sitting outside. Hay left exposed to rain and mud can lose a big chunk of its value before an animal ever gets a bite. A barn is best if you've got the space; if not, a good tarp and somewhere with proper drainage will get you most of the way there.

When Should You Buy Your Winter Hay?

The best prices and the best quality both show up right after summer cutting — think July through September. Wait until January and you're often paying 30–60% more for whatever's left. Buying your whole winter supply at once, from a single cutting, also keeps the quality consistent from your first bale all the way to your last.
